About This Kit
The Human Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) ELISA quantitates HBsAg in serum, plasma and other biological fluids.
Principle of the method
The Human Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) solid phase sandwich ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) is designed to measure the amount of the target bound between a matched antibody pair. A target specific antibody has been pre coated in the wells of the supplied microplate. Samples are then added into these wells and bind to the immobilized (capture) antibody. The sandwich is formed by the binding of the second (detector) antibody to the target on a different epitope from the capture antibody. An antibody conjugated with enzyme binds the formed sandwich. After incubation and washing steps to rid the microplate of unbound substances, a substrate solution is added that reacts with the enzyme antibody target complex to produce measurable signal. The intensity of this signal is directly proportional to the concentration of target present in the original specimen.

Target information
The hepatitis B virus is an important cause of acute and chronic liver disease. It is also the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. The virus is estimated to affect some 350 million people worldwide. Immunization against hepatitis B is an important component of preventative medicine and is offered to all children in approximately 30 countries. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family and infection with HBV is usually more serious than infection with hepatitis A virus. In some individuals the infection is not cleared and followed by persistent intracellular viral carriage that can lead to the development of hepatocelular carcinomas. There are currently 400 million HBV carriers worldwide making HBV one of the most common human pathogens.
