Agmatine, a polyamine formed by the decarboxylation of the amino acid L-arginine, is known for its diverse biological roles in the mammalian body. It acts as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator in the central nervous system, with evidence suggesting its involvement in neuroprotection, modulation of nitric oxide synthesis, and regulation of ion channels and receptors. Agmatine interacts with multiple molecular targets, including NMDA receptors and alpha 2-adrenergic receptors, influencing various physiological and pathophysiological processes. Its therapeutic potential has been investigated in contexts such as neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and psychiatric conditions. Additionally, agmatine functions as an agonist for the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), impacting gut microbiota metabolism and contributing to metabolic syndrome conditions.
