C11orf85, also known as PCIF1 (phosphorylated CTD-interacting factor 1), is located on chromosome 11. This gene encodes a protein that plays a critical role in post-transcriptional modification and regulation processes. PCIF1 is involved in the methylation of mRNA, specifically adding a methyl group to the 2'-O position of the first nucleotide adjacent to the cap structure of mRNA. This cap-specific mRNA (nucleoside-2'-O-)-methyltransferase activity is crucial for mRNA stability, translation, and the regulation of gene expression. The PCIF1 protein also has interactions with RNA polymerase II and is involved in the maturation and processing of nascent mRNA transcripts. Studies have shown that the disruption of PCIF1 function can lead to altered RNA metabolism and has potential implications in a variety of cellular processes, including immune responses and ferroptosis resistance.
