Carbamyl-lysine is a modified amino acid that is formed through a non-enzymatic reaction between lysine and urea. It is primarily found in the body, specifically in proteins that are exposed to high levels of urea, such as in the kidney and liver. Structurally, carbamyl-lysine is formed by the addition of a carbamyl group to the lysine residue in proteins. The purpose of carbamyl-lysine is not yet fully understood, but it has been suggested to play a role in protein turnover and degradation. Additionally, elevated levels of carbamyl-lysine have been associated with renal dysfunction and chronic kidney disease. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the location, structure, and purpose of carbamyl-lysine and its implications in human health and disease.
