The Influenza B matrix protein (M1) is a fundamental structural protein that plays a pivotal role in the virus lifecycle, providing shape and rigidity to the viral particle. The M1 protein lines the inner surface of the viral lipid envelope and interacts with both the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex and the cytoplasmic tails of the viral glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA), and neuraminidase (NA). This interaction is crucial for virus assembly, budding, and release from infected cells. The M1 protein also facilitates the transport of the viral RNP from the nucleus to the cytoplasm during virus replication. The highly conserved nature of the M1 protein makes it a potential target for antiviral strategies and vaccine development. Recent research has focused on understanding the precise mechanisms of M1's interaction with viral and host components to identify novel therapeutic targets.
