This antibody reacts with the hydrophilic backbone of free lipid A; it only reacts with lipid A not covalently bound to LPS.
LPS is chemically composed of a lipid part, which is responsible for the endotoxic activities of LPS, and a heteropolysaccharide which generally consists of an oligosaccharide, termed the core region, and, in some bacterial families, of the so-called O chain, composed of repeating oligosaccharide units. Lipid A is the glucosamine-based phospholipid which forms part of the bacterial outer membrane and anchors LPS to the surface of the bacteria.
