The SLC25A36 gene is part of the solute carrier family 25 (SLC25), which encodes mitochondrial transport proteins. SLC25A36 specifically functions as a transporter of pyrimidine nucleotides, including deoxynucleotide triphosphates, across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This transport is essential for maintaining mitochondrial DNA synthesis and repair, as well as for the proper functioning of mitochondrial ribonucleotide reductase. The SLC25A36 protein exhibits a characteristic transmembrane structure with six transmembrane helices and a central substrate-binding site. It operates via a mechanism involving substrate binding, conformational changes, and alternating access to the substrate-binding site from either side of the membrane. Dysregulation or mutations in SLC25A36 can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and are associated with various metabolic disorders.
