The ZNF83 gene encodes a zinc-finger protein belonging to a large family of transcription factors that play essential roles in regulating gene expression by interacting with DNA. Located on chromosome 3, ZNF83 is particularly notable for its recurrent mutations in cancer. For instance, the p.E293V missense mutation in ZNF83 has been frequently observed in bladder cancer patients, accounting for 18% of cases, and is associated with poor prognosis. This mutation disrupts the gene's tumor suppressor function, promoting increased tumor growth. Due to its significant role in tumorigenesis, ZNF83 is actively studied in cancer research as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target.
