Neurobasal Medium is a basal medium designed for long-term maintenance and maturation of pure pre-natal and embryonic neuronal cell populations without the need for an astrocyte feeder layer when used with Gibco B-27 supplements.

Neurobasal Medium is suitable for use in most neuronal cell applications. For other applications, we provide alternative formulations of Neurobasal media and B-27 supplements.

For established protocols using Neurobasal media, access our Gibco Neurobiology Protocol Handbook.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How do I use Gibco L-Glutamate with Neurobasal Medium when culturing neural cells?

L-glutamate is excitotoxic as neuron cells mature. For primary hippocampal neurons and other embryonic neurons, we recommend that you add 25 µM L-glutamate to the initial plating medium. However, after day 4, L-glutamate should not be added as it is toxic to neuron cells beyond day 4.

For neuroblastomas, L-glutamate should be included in the medium for both plating and subsequent medium changes.
