Leibovitz's L-15 Medium supports the growth of HEP-2 monkey kidney cells and primary explants of embryonic and adult human tissue. L-15 is buffered by phosphates and free base amino acids instead of sodium bicarbonate. This medium is designed for supporting cell growth in environments without CO2 equilibration.

This L-15 is modified as follows:
WithWithout
• Galactose• Glucose
• Phenol Red• HEPES
• L-glutamine• Sodium Bicarbonate
• Sodium Pyruvate

The complete formulation is available.

L-15 contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors. Therefore, F-10 requires supplementation, commonly with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). Powder forms of Gibco™ L-15 cell culture medium require pH adjustment and filtration at the time of preparation (see protocol for details).

Not for human or animal therapeutic use. Uses other than the intended use may be a violation of local law. For in vitro diagnostic use.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the osmolality of Leibovitz's L-15 Medium?

We do provide osmolality information on the certificate of analysis. All lots of Leibovitz's L-15 Medium will meet the osmolality specification of 300-340 mOsm/kg.

Does Leibovitz L-15 medium contain sodium bicarbonate?

No, Leibovitz L15 medium (liquid or powder) does not contain sodium bicarbonate (the formulation for each catalog number is published online). Developed for the support of cell growth in non CO2-equilibrated environments, L-15 formulations were developed without a sodium bicarbonate buffer system. L-15 medium is buffered by phosphates and free-base amino acids (L-arginine primarily, but also L-histidine and L-cysteine). Galactose and sodium pyruvate are used to replace glucose in order to reduce the production of acidic metabolites.

What is the shelf life of my powdered media once I reconstitute it?

Expiration date of most Gibco reconstituted dry format media (AGT or DPM) has not been established; end users should assess performance and stability of this reconstituted media in a system that is relevant to their process. A dry format product (either DPM or AGT) will age upon storage and while we may not be able to detect which component(s) degrade since we can't measure every component, that doesn't mean that the reconstituted liquid will have the same stability as a fresh liquid made by direct weigh methods.

How long can I keep my media after supplementing with serum?

Generally speaking, media can be used for up to three weeks after supplementation with serum. There are no formal studies to support this, but it is the rule of thumb used by our scientists.
